We have halved the surface area of the vineyard, keeping only the best vine plots. Thus, we are reforesting the old plots, which will create a green belt around the vines. But it doesn’t stop there; we have also planted hedges as well as fruit trees and endemic trees in the middle of the vines. This is what we call agroforestry. We also practice conservation agriculture, meaning we no longer plow the soil. All these practices allow us to recreate an ecosystem that will enable the vines to develop their own defenses against diseases, thanks to the insects, bats, and earthworms that are repopulating the hedges and naturally fertilizing the soil. This will also improve the structure of the earth and the permeability of the soil, thereby retaining water in the aquifers. The result is a minimal use of inputs, protected water resources, and a vineyard that respects its terroir!
“Puy Faure castle: Cultivating the vine, preserving nature” A mini-documentary by Guillaume Marrou produced for the 2025 “Raconte Ton Territoire” festival on the theme “from farm to fork.” The children from the school in Aubie and Espessas in Gironde met Anne-Laure, a winemaker in their commune, and were able to discover all the ecological challenges of the vineyard.
